Cargo Theft

CHPA supports the Pharmaceutical Cargo Security Coalition, an organization dedicated to preventing cargo theft in pharmaceutical logistics operations.

Prescription or over-the-counter (OTC) medicine cargo theft is an increasing problem. If these medicines have been tampered with, or are not stored or handled properly, consumers may be at risk. FDA has become engaged, holding several meetings with key stakeholders, culminating with a letter to manufacturers outlining its position on cargo thefts. To address the increase in thefts, FDA seeks to:

  • Raise industry awareness about each company’s responsibility to review and strengthen its security practices;
  • Inform industry of the actions FDA will take when the agency becomes aware of a large-scale theft;
  • Outline steps that companies should take when large-scale theft occurs; and
  • Emphasize the importance of notifying and informing members of the supply chain and the public after thefts occur.

Manufacturers interested in receiving regular updates on cargo theft may join the Pharmaceutical Cargo Security Coalition, formed by organizations from a variety of different disciplines that either directly relates to or supports pharmaceutical logistics operations. CHPA is a member of this coalition.
