CHPA Statement on Over-the-Counter Naproxen

The following is a statement from the Consumer Healthcare Products Association in response to FDA’s recent statement on NIH halting a clinical trial involving non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs in patients at risk of developing Alzheimer’s Disease:

Washington, D.C. (December 21, 2004)—Over-the-counter medicines provide safe and effective relief for millions of Americans when used as directed on the label.  As science evolves, and safety questions arise, it is important to examine available data carefully and seriously, and to work with FDA in taking the appropriate steps to address new evidence. CHPA member companies have a strong history of working with FDA, and will continue this trend as the new data is reviewed.

As with any medicine, FDA’s advice to read and follow label directions carefully on over-the-counter naproxen is the best advice.  The OTC medicine label is the best tool to ensure that consumers use these medicines safely and effectively.
