CHPA Commends Senate Subcommittee's Funding Package for FDA

Association recognizes critical need for additional funding for the agency

Washington, D.C. (July 17, 2007)—The Consumer Healthcare Products Association issued the following statement in support of the U.S. Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Agriculture, Rural Development, Food and Drug Administration, and Related Agencies’ approval of increased funding for the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA):

"CHPA commends Subcommittee Chair Herbert H. Kohl (D-Wis.), Ranking Member Robert Bennett (R-Utah), and all of the distinguished members of the subcommittee for their commitment to FDA’s critical public health functions. For years, FDA’s growing responsibilities and challenges in ensuring the safety of the nation’s food and drug supply have far outpaced the funding it has been given to get the job done. We applaud Senators Kohl and Bennett for their leadership in charting a different course for FDA and call on Congress to approve this increase in FDA funding to help meet our nation’s commitment to advancing and protecting public health. While this funding increase is a good first step toward restoring FDA's capacity to fulfill its critical mission, substantial increases also will be needed next year and beyond to fully fund the agency."
